App Redesign

Overview

The Etsy Sellers app is a user-friendly mobile tool that empowers artisans and entrepreneurs on the Etsy platform. It provides on-the-go access for managing their shop, including features like real-time order notifications, messaging, and shop analytics. The new Seller app is relatively new, having come out in late 2022 and continues to update its features to best support its users and their needs.

Research & User Insights

The conclusion drawn from various discussions on forums and reviews on the app was that the Seller app was trying to provide all of the features and information as the desktop seller's page but without adapting it properly for the mobile experience.

Some sections were overly simplified and no longer presented all of the desired information while others showed an excess of information that was hard to sort through on a mobile device.

Redesign

Wireframe Iterations

I made at least four different wireframes for each page to test out different layouts and designs. I kept elements that I thought worked well and took note of what didn't.

Home Page*

*I eventually ended up expanding the shop summary into its own statistics page, similar to the original app, to avoid overloading the user upon entering.

The Home Page was an area that could be changed to give a more thorough overview of what was happening in the shop.

The Messages section neede to be arrange in a way that could accomodate small tags  and a system to filter conversations.

Orders needed to have a way to get a quick overview of the status of incomplete orders. I also wanted to implement a cleaner but more flexible filtering system for this page.

Design Card

I made the icons on the navigation bar larger and used a sans-serif font for the numbers for increased accessibility.

I also changed the blue to match the app's icon and accented it with Etsy's orange.

The Result

With all other elements established, I began to design the high-fidelity prototype.

Before

Star Seller eligibility doesn't frequently change and therefore isn't a homepage priority. News & Activity's spaced-out format makes it difficult to understand trends.

Unread messages are easy to glance over. There is also no way to distinguish between active conversations and old messages.

Graphs are placed side by side and can be scrolled through to find desired information.

Filters only allow a single status of orders to be visible at a time. If names or order totals are too long, they won't be visible on this page.

After

Activity now shows a more holistic overview of the shop and listing statistics. Statistics also now show a percent change between the current and past selected timeframe.

Reminders can now be made for DM's and conversations can be achieved for a more organized look. Further filters can be applied to only show read, unread, or marked converstations.

After

Graphs show instant comparisons between the current and past selected time frames and drop-down options to change between categories. Traffic also shows the percentage for each category for easier information digestion.

A summary block now provides information on the status of orders. Orders additionally now show their status and highlight if they are overdue. Process by and processed dates are visible on the overview page as well.

Refelction

First Undertaking

This was my first UX project and by the end of it, I learned about so many features in Figma that could've helped me streamline the process. Sticker sheets and components in particular can help with making repeating designs that much more consistent.

Navigation Necessities

Most mobile devices nowadays have built-in "back" buttons that work for any app or webpage. That being said, I feel that it is still important to incorporate that into an app's design so that navigation remains easy.

Accessibility Eye

A lot of minor additions were made to increase accessibility, like labeled icons, increased visual contrast, or different font types. While the app before didn't seem unfriendly to me as someone who generally doesn't have accessibility issues, breaking down and checking all of the different categories revealed just how many changes should be made.
